A Cedaredge StoryWalk® book unfolds as the reader embarks on a journey down the trail, along the Surface creek, moving from page to page, from beginning to end.  A unique and entertaining way to read a book, StoryWalks® have been gaining popularity throughout the country and internationally. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and StoryWalks® have now been installed in 50 states and 11 countries around the world.

The installation of the very first permanent StoryWalk® in Delta County was completed in early December 2016.  Trail-walkers young and old came out for the Grand Opening in Cedaredge. It was a brisk, sunny day, yet even the bite of cold in the air did not keep people from enjoying a nice walk and a great read. In fact, the wintery weather only helped bring the tale of the lost little bear to life.
The story featured at the grand opening was Cooper’s Christmas Adventure, written and illustrated by Cedaredge High School students Jessica Craig, Hannah Hatheway, Julia Jackson, Holly Jenkins and Daizy-Ann McCarthy. The trail is a pet-friendly walk and for the trail debut, library staff members were stationed at the trailhead greeting walkers with cookies and hot apple cider, and dog biscuits for their four-legged, furry friends.

A healthy and active lifestyle is important to the Cedaredge community. The Town of Cedaredge is proud to be designated a HEAL Town which is a partnership between LiveWell Colorado and the Colorado Municipal League aimed at improving community access to healthy eating and active living.

“The StoryWalk® really hits three important aspects of a healthy community: early childhood literacy, physical activity, and intergenerational community,” Greg Brinck, intern with the Town of Cedaredge says.  “We hope that the StoryWalk® will encourage families to walk, read and enjoy our public trails together.”

The community shares in Brinck’s sentiment regarding the project. Children and adults alike are excited to visit and read each story.  Delta County Libraries works in partnership with the Town on the project and the community collaboration between the Library, the Town of Cedaredge and the Cedaredge High School is a tribute to community pride and guarantees the projects on-going success.

“The wonderful thing about having a permanent StoryWalk® on the Surface Creek Trail is that it will continue to give people the opportunity to get outdoors and read with new stories going up throughout the year,” says Cara Morton, Cedaredge Library Manager. “The possibilities are endless!”

To experience the results of this fun, creative collaboration, visit the Surface Creek Trail starting at SE Independence Avenue in Cedaredge.
