She approached the committee for permission to raise funds and then asked Stacy Malmgren at Stacy’s On Main to see if they could meet at the coffee shop to work on the project.  From there the project just grew.  It started with 8 ladies who meet on Saturday mornings from 9 to noon and pretty soon the coffee shop was filled with folks watching and learning to fold cranes.

Within a couple of weeks they were cranking out crane chains in an effort to have inventory to sell during the Christmas Holidays. As word spread that the effort was underway, more folks joined in and some were folding at home and just delivering cranes to the coffee shop on Saturday morning.

According to Lorae, “It’s starts to be addictive.  Pretty soon you just start folding and don’t even realize it.”

The crane chains are being sold at ImpressionZ Gallery, the Apple Shed and at Reve’ Studio in Cedaredge and also at The Spotlight Salon in Delta.  They can also be purchased at Stacy’s On Main and in March they were a big hit at the Eckert Crane Days festival so watch for them at this years’ Applefest in October.

Most recently the group hosted a book reading of “Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes” which is a children's historical novel written by Canadian-American author Eleanor Coerr and published in 1977. Set in Japan after World War II, the short novel is a fictional retelling of the story of Sadako Sasaki, who lived in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing by the United States.  It’s a sad, but inspiring story that tells the legend of the cranes and their promise.

As of this writing, the Cedaredge group, known locally as the “Craniacs” have far exceeded their goal of 1,000 cranes and their donation of more than $1500 is helping to move the dream of a local Arts Center forward for the community of Cedaredge and the Surface Creek Valley.
