... A total of 50 kilometers of ski trails are groomed for skate and classic styles as well marked and signed trails
for ski touring on the Mesa. You’ll find groomed ski trails through the wilderness of Grand Mesa National Forest at three locations: Skyway, County Line and Ward Creek. All trails are located just off Colorado Highway 65 on the Mesa, except the North Ward trailhead, which is located off the road to the Grand Mesa Visitor’s Center. You’ll also find several back
country trails, as well.
For those that prefer a slower pace, the Snowshoe Trail at Skyway has been revived! The trail is about 4 kilometer
long, with shorter loops possible by going out or returning on Sunset trail. You will have vistas to the north northwest
overlooking Powderhorn, the Colorado River valley, Grand Valley, and even a peak of the La Sal Mountains in Utah.
The GMNC warming hut at Skyway provides relief from weather and social space. The hut is a cozy, woodstove heated
shelter for skiers to gather before and after skiing. It provides essential shelter on lesson days to meet and sign-in for ski lessons and clinics. When the wind is howling and the temps are below zero, it gives shelter from the storm. Many skiers
and families bring their lunches and gather in the hut, bringing games for their kids or books to read while one parent skis. It is a great opportunity for skiers to get to know one another and a good social space. In this time of COVID-19, at least for the start of the season, the warming hut will remain closed. As virus conditions change, we hope to reopen the hut to once again be our community center.
Many people enjoy skiing with their dogs on the trails maintained by the GMNC. You can enjoying skiing with your dog at County Line, Ward, or any of the other many trails on the Grand Mesa. Please help keep the Skyway Trail System dog-free. Skyway is the staging area for kids and adult lessons as well as the Grand Mesa Nordic Ski Race Series; therefore, dogs are discouraged on the Skyway trails. The USFS requires dogs to be on a 6’ leash in parking lots and at trailheads.
