The Cedaredge area is home to a growing number of vineyards with tasting rooms and each has a diverse selection of wines to explore. You’ll find the tasting room at Stoney Mesa Winery just about a mile west of Cedaredge. Their tasting room is in a turn of the century, original homestead house, decorated with materials from the property’s historical past. You’ll enjoy the rustic elegance from the old chicken coop door in the art gallery to the apple crate display shelves and a grain bin island.
Be sure to call ahead and set up a tasting appointment at Chill Switch Wines, a boutique winery in Cedaredge. Winemaker Dave Aschwanden crafts the Chill Switch Wines with patience and old-world techniques that allow the wine to develop its complex flavors naturally. Crafted exclusively from grapes grown in Colorado, all Chill Switch wines are made without color enhancers, flavorings, artificial aromas, stabilizers, clarifiers etc. If you’re downtown Cedaredge you might also stop in at Main Street Market where you can taste Chill Switch and do a little shopping, as well.
Williams Cellars has a tasting room at the AppleShed in town where you can enjoy a grand selection of artwork while you sample their wines. Making wine is a natural extension of the family’s lineage of 5 generations of fruit growing in Western Colorado. Their award winning wines are made using only high quality grapes harvested from their own vineyards and other local growers to produce a variety of hand-crafted wines that compliment all your dining and entertaining.
At all of the locations, the friendly and experienced staff are there to help you discover wines that are perfect for entertaining friends or just enjoying while relaxing at home. You’ll find wines that pair with almost all foods and some that will even take the place of dessert.
The higher elevation and low humidity coupled with cool nights help retain a high degree of acidity as the grapes ripen. This is a positive for all varieties grown in the region, but it makes for especially perfect Reisling and Gewurztraminer. You might even find a Pinot Gris, a Rose or something sparkly. If you’ve spent the day fishing on Grand Mesa, a nice white would go great with all those wild trout you brought back.
Reds aren't neglected either. Some fabulous Merlots, Zinfandels, Cabernets and Malbecs will delight your taste buds along with a Syrah or a Tempranillo, right here on the mesa slopes. Those same cool nights and warm days are especially kind to many varieties of grapes and local winemakers continue to experiment with different varietals to create distinctive flavors to tempt your pallet.
In addition to a growing assortment of local wines, Snow Capped Cider is a locally produced cider company that has been producing Colorado’s finest apples for over a century. Over 100 varieties of apples and 40 varieties of peaches have been grown on the Williams family farms, introducing many heritage style varieties and cider specific fruit through the years. This local cidery combines old-world farmhouse style cider-making with modern fermentation and aging techniques. They create small batch, handcrafted ciders from fruit picked straight from their local trees. From “Crabby Ol’ Granny” to “Honeycrisp” it’s well worth an afternoon in the tasting room because you’ll just have to try them all.
