Barn Quilting con't

Some are placed to guide walks in a downtown area that includes historical buildings. More often, quilt trails take visitors on a drive through the countryside where barn quilts are mounted on farm buildings, on homes, along fences, and sometimes on freestanding posts. A quilt trail may include stops at galleries, farm stands, wineries and other points of interest that make the journey a day-long event.

The concept of barn quilts began in Adams County, Ohio when long-time quilter, Donna Sue Groves wanted to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn. Rather than creating just one, she decided on a "sampler" of twenty quilt squares. Several barn owners signed on, and the work began on the first “Barn Quilt Trail”.

This simple idea has spread to 48 states and the trail system continues to grow. Over 7000 quilts are part of organized trails; dozens more are scattered through the countryside waiting to be discovered.

Nancy has completed 4 quilts and donated them to be displayed on local buildings in Cedaredge. As time and display space allows, Nancy says she will be working on additional “quilts” so plan a trip downtown, visit our local shops and eateries and check-out the Barn Quilts of Cedaredge.
